The Dangers of Overcommitment

How to Avoid Burnout

The dangers of over-commitment are real. Lately, I have felt exhausted, and instead of enjoying the sunshine this summer, I’ve spent daylight hours sleeping.

I feel like Rip van Winkle and am getting extremely frustrated. My overwhelming tiredness is keeping me from being constantly productive in my business.

This tiredness is not what I want, so I have done a lot of self-reflection and asked myself the question: Am I Overcommitted? Am I Burnt out?

The Problem

The problem is that today’s society confuses many people, as it mixes workaholics and overachievers in similar circles of praise. In the midst of this form of idol worship, it’s hard to slow down and see the possible negative consequences of trying to do too much. The dangers of over-commitment are very real.

Still, it’s been said for many years, and by experts in a lot of fields, that this is exactly what happens when we become overcommitted. And while we may not see this as any sort of mental illness connected to our fast-paced and always-connected society, many fear that being overcommitted may lead to just that.

Dangers of Overcommitment

Overcommitting carries many risks, like burnout. And one of the most significant is the appearance of being very productive. When we are in constant motion, always running to and fro, it seems like we are doing a lot. However, being busy and being productive are not the same thing.

If we are too busy, we may feel like we have a huge amount of things that we should be doing that are big and important. And yet, some of the tasks may not be huge or important; they may just seem that way in the moment.

Being busy and overextended can also lead to a serious drop in the quality and substance of the work that we do manage to finish.

Nervous Energy is Stress by another Name

Carrying too many obligations can really raise a person’s stress levels. Always racing to finish on time and trying to balance various commitments can make you feel a sort of perpetual unease.

Nervous energy is stress by another name. This kind of stress doesn’t just hit your nerves; it’s not good for your body, either. It can lead to problems with your cardiovascular system and hamper the function of your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to all manner of viruses and bacteria.

And let’s not forget your poor old brain, which may just shrink as a result of all this juggling.

Burn Out is Dangerous

In fact, burnout is dangerous. It is what happens when stress tips the balance of life the wrong way.

It is when our systems can no longer function effectively under the weight of all we ask them to do. And it is what happens when there is no time for recovery. Being burned out is not the same as being stressed or just tired, but rather a real and severe physical and emotional state of being

It is what happens to those of us who have spread ourselves so thin that we are no longer connected to anything in a meaningful way.

Damaged Relationships

Healthy relationships require time and effort. If you try to do too much, it can damage your relationship with family, friends and coworkers.

You might find yourself cancelling plans, forgetting important events or being mentally absent even when you are physically there.

This can lead over time to a sense of loneliness as well as damage your connection to the people who actually matter.

Impaired Decision-Making

When overwhelmed by responsibilities, decision-making is impaired. The constant pressure of managing several tasks may result in mental fatigue which makes it difficult to think properly and make sound decisions.

Such wrong choices can have long-term effects whether on personal or professional life.

Loss of Passion and Creativity

For creativity and passion to grow your mind must be free enough for new ideas exploration and indulgence in what interests you. When you’re overcommitted, this is hardly possible.

Having a tight schedule means that most likely inspirational activities will be left out while passions turn into burdensome chores.

It may suppress creativity in you making life less satisfying on an overall basis.

How to Avoid Overcommitment

Set clear priorities: know what you really want and concentrate on such things only.

Schedule Downtime: Make sure to allocate some time in your schedule for resting and relaxation. This is necessary to help you recharge, and keep your productivity at a high level.

Practice Mindfulness: Being mindful can help you stay present and focused on the task at hand, reducing the temptation to multitask and overcommit.

Regularly Reassess Your Commitments: I have done this today, so I am writing this blog post. However, I realise I need to review my week at the end of each week to keep an eye on overcommitment and adjust accordingly.

So, periodically review your responsibilities and let go of those that no longer serve you or bring you joy.

In Conclusion

Although ambition alongside a strong work ethic is desirable, it is important to recognize the perils of spreading oneself too thin. Learning how to avoid Burnout must be a regular task for you to ensure you’re on track with your health goals.

You must prioritise your well-being. (I’m talking to myself here!)
